Real pure vanilla bean vs synthetic vanillin, dont endanger your health

Most of us already know about vanilla scent and love it very much. But do you know if the vanilla aroma that we get it come from the original vanilla bean from nature directly or come from artificial (synthetic) products resulting from the chemical process of some materials? Does it affect our health? 

The real and pure vanilla bean comes from an orchid, and is completely natural. The flavor extract made from it is called vanilla. Yes, the word that ends in an “a,” and not an “n.” The beans are left to dry in the sun and cured, which is when their flavor develops.

Furthermore, vanilla beans can only be obtained from hand-pollinated flowering orchids in a handful of tropical areas. Vanilla beans are usually soaked with a liquid medium such as alcohol or glycerin (a food-based sweet liquid) for a certain number of weeks to produce vanilla extract. 

Real vanilla also has a deep, complex flavor, not an overly sweet taste. Real vanilla has an almost smokey flavor with a depth that cheap vanilla simply can’t replace. 

How about Synthetic Vanillin? Vanillin is this same compound, produced synthetically. While not quite as good as the real thing, vanillin makes a fairly decent substitute. anillin, on the other hand, is what you’ll find in cheap extracts at the store that are also called “imitation vanilla”. Imitation vanilla may also be called “vanilla flavor”. 

In the 1880s the first synthetic vanillas came from Germany, providing a cheaper alternative to real pure vanilla.  Soon it was discovered that synthetic vanillin could be made from paper pulp and coal tar.  

By adding coumarin to synthetic vanillin, the flavor was a little more like pure vanilla. Coumarin can be toxic, especially to the liver. We’ve outlawed its use in the United States since the 1950s.  While most labels say, “No Coumarin,” don’t count on it!

Health Benefits of Natural Vanilla
It’s no superfood, but vanilla does have some nice perks. The vanilla bean pod contains antioxidants, and up to 90% of those antioxidants are preserved in vanilla extract. Vanilla has also shown anti-inflammatory properties and liver-protecting properties in animal studies. At high doses, it has shown cholesterol-lowering abilities in studies.

Synthetic Vanillin Health Concerns?
Without a doubt, artificial or synthetic vanillin is more processed than vanilla extract…but is it bad for you? A few studies have shown the potential for allergic reactions to synthetic vanillin. Other studies have shown that sensitive individuals may get migraines, triggered by synthetic vanillin.

Imitation or synthetic vanillin is only one fragrance.  Pure real vanilla has over 500 organic components that make up its fragrance.

Our body doesn’t care where the vanilla scene came from. No one could tell the difference between vanilla bean vanillin and vanillin from eugenol by taste or smell. It is not possible. There is a way to tell.

Is it best to use articial or synthetic vanillin or should we use the (expensive) vanilla bean?

It mostly depends on your reasons for choosing. It you don’t like artificial stuff, don’t choose the artificial one, it strict for your healthy reason only. But, if you purely go for flavour, don’t worry about it too much. it really depends on You.
